Cystitis is a common urinary tract infection that typically affects the bladder. Symptoms include a burning sensation when passing urine, increased frequency, urgency, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and lower abdominal discomfort. While often mild, infections can worsen if untreated. Many cases resolve with prompt antibiotic treatment; some people benefit from symptom relief measures such as increased fluids and pain control. Recurrent or severe symptoms, fever, blood in urine, or symptoms during pregnancy require urgent assessment to rule out complications or kidney involvement.

Nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim or pivmecillinam are typical choices depending on suitability and local guidance. For mild cases, supportive care such as pain relief and fluids may help, but antibiotics speed recovery and reduce complications. We also discuss prevention strategies for recurrent infections, review contraceptives or medications that may affect risk, and arrange follow-up if symptoms persist or worsen.
